Softcover
1881 · New York
New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1881. Original Copy (Not a reprint or e-book). Softcover. Good contents with only a few faint check marks next to some listings. Baltimore Museum of Art (deaccessioned from) blind stamp on last page with ex-lib. marks/some age toning on front cover; aged tape to spine.. Grey flecked paper wraps with black lettering. 33 pp. with no illustrations. Catalogue/handbook of works on loan to the museum and on view from May to October 1881. The museum opened in 1872 (founded in 1870), so this Handbook No. 6 is very early. This lists 340 works, nearly all are European of varying dates. A section of 54 works by William T. Richards, Hudson River School landscape artist, is included, with an introduction by Rev. E. L. Magoon. Richards's paintings mostly are images of Cape Ann, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and the Jersey shore area. These paintings remained for the next loan exhibition, held November 1881 to April 1882. A very scarce publication. NOTE: Worldcat has this title dated as 1887, but this copy is clearly printed with the date 1881.
