1790 · Saint-Marc
by [Saint Domingue]
Saint-Marc: Imprimerie de l'Assemblée général, 1790. Broadsheet, approximately 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Contemporary manuscript signatures on verso. Faint foxing. Near fine. Untrimmed. A brief but important act in the history of the first revolution of Saint Domingue. It is the law by which the separatist assembly, following the attempts of loyalist troops to dissolve it on the night of July 29 or 30, 1790, tried to organize resistance around Saint-Marc, before taking to the sea in a ship called the Leopard, in flight back to France. With the manuscript signatures of the President, Vice President, and Secretaries of the Assembly below their printed signatures. A rare Saint Domingue imprint, and not in OCLC or the French Union Catalogue.
