Minor riots occurred in Rutland, Vt., Wooster, Ohio, Boston, MA., and Portsmouth, NH, but none equaled in length or destructiveness those in New York City. Fanned by Democratic opposition to the war ... for four days the city was a welter of conflagrations, assaults and defiances, costing a thousand casualties and 1.5 Million property loss[Dictionary of American History, vol. 2, p. 164].
