"In 1908 a young Dutchman, Geldoph ('Dolph') Adriaan Kessler, embarked on a unusual journey around the world. Appolinted secretary to Henri Deterding, director of Koninklijke Olie (which had merged with Shell in 1907), he travelled via Port Said to the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), Hong Kong, China, Japan and the United States. He wrote home to his mother regularly, telling her of this adventures, but it was only when he got to Hong Kong that he had the idea of buying a camera to record his journey in pictures as well. Cameras were not at all common at the time, so he decision to buy one would not have been taken lightly. ... When he returned home he pasted the small snapshots into an album that was donated to the Rijksmuseum by his heirs in 2007."
