Portsmouth, VA: Somerville Printery, 1934. Printed broadside, 11 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, the text framed on top and bottom by ornamental rules, the imprint under the bottom rule. Daniel Atkins (1866-1923), for whom the post was named, served as a steward in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1898 for his attempt at a sea rescue of a shipmate. The program included a reading of "The Colored Solder," an address, "A Tribute to Fallen Comrades," and musical selections including "Taps" and the "Star Spangled Banner." The Somerville Printery, active in Portsmouth 1913-1936, is represented by a collection of 21 items, all for African-American organizations and events, held at the University of Virginia; that collection seems not to include this broadside and we have located no other.
