first edition
1889
by Hearn, Lafcadio
1889. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1889. 4 pp undated ads. Original salmon cloth decorated in brown and black.
First Edition of Hearn's third book, following STRAY LEAVES (1884) and SOME CHINESE GHOSTS (1887). During the summer of 1884, while living in New Orleans, Hearn had gone for a rest to Grand Ile, in the Gulf of the Mississippi. There he witnessed a tidal wave disaster that gave him the outline for CHITA; the book is essentially a series of vivid descriptions unified by its account of a lost child. This is a fine, clean copy (the slightest of rubbing at the extremities) of this handsomely-bound book. Blanck 7918. Housed in a cloth slipcase, this copy bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair. (Inventory #: 13701)
