1854. · Boston:
by Adams, Nehemiah.
Small 8vo, blind stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 214 pp. Binding leaning a bit, some wear to binding, rubbing to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown, some aging and browning; otherwise very good. This copy is from the library of Jack London, and has his bookplate on the front pastedown. The Adams (1808-1878) was born in Salem and was opposed to slavery, but felt some of the abolitionists were exaggerating what was happening in the south. However, some of his comments would suggest that not everything was being exaggerated. In is chapter on Slave auctions, he describes how he felt when a one year old child was being sold, and taken from its parents. He also shares his thoughts on the "peaceful" dissolution of the Union because of slavery, which he did not think was possible. A rather scarce title. (Inventory #: 106447)
