New York: D. Appleton, 1869. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes of plates, containing "upwards of twelve thousand engravings." Translated from German with an introduction by Spencer F. Baird. Bound in publisher's original green half leather with five raised bands and spine stamped in decorative gilt. Covers ruled in gilt over green cloth. Edges in gilt. Front and back covers to both volumes of plates detached; text blocks remain intact with spine. All six volumes show moderate wear to extremities. This set is ex library with "Withdrawn" stamped over library stamps. Front covers to all six volumes have residue of what likely would have been title plates. Speckled foxing on a very small number of pages. Text block to all six volumes are solid with the exception of Text Volume One where the first pages, including the Title Page, are loose. Illustrations are vibrant and a high point to this set. Volumes of plates are good candidates for rebinding.
