All edges and end papers marbled. Some edgewear, very good. U.S. edition of the first five volumes of Reclus's profusely illustrated geographical encyclopedia of the world. Begun while in exile in Switzerland for revolt against the French government and support of the Paris Commune, Reclus would eventually author 19 volumes in this series, covering also Africa, Asia, and the Americas. His works were recognized with the gold medal of the Paris Geographical Society in 1892. In addition to being a renowned geographer, Reclus was an anarchist, vegetarian, free unionist (anti-marriage), and pro-nudity. (Inventory #: 312190)
