The Indian Tribes of the United States. Their History, Antiquities, Customs, Religion, Arts, Language, Traditions, Oral Legends and Myths.
1885. · London and Philadelphia:
by Drake, Francis S, Editor.
2 Volumes, folio, later binder's cloth, illustrated with over 100 plates. A little musty, some dampstaining along bottom margin, a little additional dampstaining in upper margin in volume one, front endpaper somewhat brittle, some wear and spotting to binding (mostly Vol. I), top hinge of volume one a little weak, normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a highly detailed and influential work based on the efforts of Henry R. Schoolcraft (1793-1864). Schoolcraft spent his life studying the manners and customs of Native Americans, and in 1822 was appointed agent of Indian Affairs of the Northwest frontier. In1847 he was asked by Congress to do research on the tribes of the United States, and from 1850-1857 he published six volumes on the history, condition and prospects of the American Indian. In 1880 Drake would update Schoolcraft's work, and publish his efforts in these two rather massive volumes. This work has to be considered one of the most important studies on American Indian tribes, providing considerable detail on their manners, customs and history. Extra postage required. ANB.
