Beck (art history, Columbia) expands and develops his 1963 dissertation on the 15th-century Italian sculptor, providing a full consideration of his personality and works. This is the complete treatment of the artist which Charles Seymour's Jacopo della Quercia (Yale Univ. Pr., 1973), the last monograph in English, did not aim to be. Drawing on anniversary publications and later research, and publishing extensive original documents fully, Beck gives us a vivid picture of a sculptor who rose above localities to become a major artist in Lucca, Siena, and Bologna. The photographs are smaller than in Seymour, but mostly crisp and clear. Essential for art history and general art collections. (Jack Perry Brown). (Inventory #: 156170)
