Bound in rose satin cloth over boards, gilt spines lettered direct, top edges gilt. Bookplate and release stamp of The Philip H. and A.S.W. Rosenbach Foundation Museum in each volume, moderate fading to the spine backs and wear at the spine ends, very good or better examples of the delicate bindings. Barbey d'Aurevilly made his reputation with *Les Diaboliques* a series of tales which recalled the Satanism of the Romantic period in the first half of the century, and which were suppressed by the police upon first publication in 1874. He was said to influence the work of both Henry James and Marcel Proust. A handsome set. (Inventory #: 412943)
