First edition. Inscribed on the title page "E.W. Laight from General Swift, 1815" (probably in the hand of the recipient). Joseph Gardner Swift (1783-1865) was promoted to brigadier-general for service during the War of 1812, became the army's chief engineer, and was superintendent of West Point, 1816-1818.
