Herbert was a science historian, chaired the Department of the History of Science at the University of Wisconsin from 1960-1965 and at Harvard from 1977-1984. Originally a working scientist, Hiebert transition to history after finding himself troubled by the relationship between science and the nuclear arms race. His scholarship focused on the history of chemistry and the physical sciences, the relations between science and religion, and the scientific philosophies of various major scientists, especially those operating in the German-speaking world in th elate 19th and early 20th century.
