Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1866. FIRST EDITION. With 50 hand-colored lithographic plates by P.W.M. Trap, some signed by Joseph Smit. Publisher’s green blind-stamped cloth, a bit worn, title and author in gilt on front cover; text in generally excellent condition with only minor spotting. First edition of this standard work on the birds in the former Dutch Indies. The three parts include Pittas, King-Fishers and Hawks. The beautiful ornithological plates are from watercolors by Trap. Someone (a previous owner perhaps) has pencilled in the genus names of the birds on many of the plates.
