Witchita, Kansas: Eagle Priting House, 1888. FIRST EDITION. With frontispiece plus 7 additional full-page plates. Publisher’s blue cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine, a bit rubbed; interior good despite some leaves being browned due to paper stock. Gift inscription on the fly-leaf dated 1889. First edition. The author recounts his travels throughout Europe, Palestine and Africa. Written during a time when Americans were not primarily traveling to Asia and Africa, this work is made up largely of the letters the author contributed while abroad to the Wichita Daily Eagle in Kansas. Of particular interest is Stewart’s observations of precautions that were taken with respect to cholera and other epidemics in Italy and Egypt. Stewart (1838-1923) was related to Lyman Stewart, one of the founders and first president of Union Oil Company of California.
