Pittsburgh: Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, 1810. FIRST EDITION. Full calf, spine label, new endpapers; interior with some discoloration and foxing due to paper stock. First edition. Cuming (1762–1828) was an Irish-born doctor, traveler, and author. In 1806, he purchased land in Ohio which prompted his exploratory trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers through Louisana and the Floridas. He wrote about his journey in Sketches of a tour providing an "excellent and extensive observations on pioneer conditions throughout the Ohio and lower Mississippi valleys" (Howes).
Additionally, the appendix contains numerous narratives, published for the first time, describing the greater Americas from other notable explorers like George Loskeil, Gideon Forsyth, S.P. Hildreth and more. These include topographical descriptions, notes on diseases, and information about Native American art and culture.
