Ownership signature on paste-down. Overall a marvelous copy in original condition. First American edition (first printed in Edinburgh the prior year). Russell, an English author, details his travels through Germany and the southern provinces of the Austrian empire. Russell’s captivating observations on the Germanic and Austrian peoples are especially important following establishment of the German Confederation. Everything from politics, customs and education to the arts, architecture, festivals and more are covered. The author utilizes his honest opinions combined with humor in his descriptions making for an amusing and interesting read.

Russell (1796-1846) studied at the University of Glasgow, where he received a gold medal for his work on the Constitution of the United States in which he expressed interest in a democratic form of government.
