Paris: publisher not stated , 1915 ca. Good. 275 x 190 mm oblong. [1] leaf and [54] photogravures printed on card stock showing views of Paris, St. Cloud, Versailles, and Trianons during the years of transition from horse-drawn to motorized vehicles. Captions in French and English. Bound in blue cloth decorated with polychrome lozenge of a wind-powered sailing ship. All edges gilt. Upper covers a bit soiled and discolored, with some fraying along right edge. Owner's inscription in ink on front pastedown, "Paris France, January 31st 1919. U.S.S. New Mexico @ Brest." Sporadic notes in pencil on reverse of some images (e.g. "very fine paintings in long gallery" opposite a photo of the Louvre).
1913 was the last year of service for horse-drawn busses in Paris. This volume of photographs reproduced in fine photogravure must date from shortly thereafter. Motorized busses are visible, along with a few motorcars, but the majority of cabs are horse-drawn or, indeed, pulled by men. All the city's great landmarks are represented.
