Quarter Morocco. Marbled Boards.
1829, 1834
by Heath, Henry
Charles Tilt, 1829, 1834. Quarter Morocco. Marbled Boards. . Fine. Oblong 4to., 26 by 36.5 cm. Six hand-colored plates of caricature, six to nine separate illustrations per plate or page. The suite of plates were included in a later collection, the Caricaturist's Scrap Book, but in this later form the plates were not hand-colored typically. In this collection of 45 caricature vignettes, the conceit is a humorous take on a "nautical" word or phrase. The resulting illustration may have nothing to do with the particular word or phrase. All the vignettes, though, provide us with a window into Regency era humor and society, as the real theme is an upending of that society as the artist perceived its mores and ways. Condition: the pages are immaculate, and one dare say, pristine. The binding is modern quarter morocco, with no issues whatsoever.
