Freud (1922-2011) was a German-born English painter who specialized in figurative art. The grandson of Sigmund Freud, he was known for his portraits and nudes, often portrayed in unsettling interiors and urban landscapes. His works are “noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model.” He was drawn toward the somewhat “extreme” body type which he portrayed in a realist manner with stark and evocative psychological intensity.
