Signed first American edition, first printing translated by Lysander Kemp. Set among the students of Lencio Prado Military Academy in Peru (which Llosa actually attended), a group of cadets start a rebellion. It is said that the school itself burned several copies and condemned the book as propaganda against Peru. In 1962 it won Premio Biblioteca Breve for best fiction novel and was later turned into a film.
Llosa (b. 1936) is a Peruvian writer, politician and college professor. In 2010, Llosa won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and is considered to have had “a larger international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom,” (wikipedia).
