The first (and majority) section contains the biography of Earl Edward Hyde of Clarendon. The work is often attributed to historian John Oldmixon.

Hyde (1609-1674) was the first Earl of Clarendon, a historian who wrote The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (1717) and The History of Rebellion and Civil War in Ireland (1720).
