First published in 1640, but the second printing under this title, this therapeutic medical treatise outlines treatments for 85 different bodily ailments and includes historical and practical descriptions of five chronic conditions. It is divided into four parts: sickness of the digestive and endocrine systems, sickness of the brain and heart, women’s illnesses, and essays on diseases. The book concludes with Riviére’s medical recipes, including the Potion de Riviére, a carbonated anti-emetic renowned for its efficacy.
Riviére (1589-1655) was a French physician and instructor. He was medical counselor to King Louis XIII. He is most famous for giving the earliest modern description of aortic valve failure.
