The birds of El Salvador

[with] A new race of sharp-shinned hawk from Mexico

  • Chicago: Field Museum of Natural History, 1938
By Dickey, Donald R.; A J Van Rossem.
Chicago: Field Museum of Natural History, 1938. First edition, inscribed by Van Rossem to Allan Brooks. Very Good. 24 cm; 609 pages, frontispiece plate of bobwhites after a painting by Allan Brooks. Maps and figures in text. Bound in original publisher's wraps. Inscribed on upper wrap to "Allen Brooks, with my very best regards. A.J. van Rossem, May 16, 1939." Pages unopened. Later bookplate of Ian McTaggart Cowan, the Canadian science television pioneer. Covers slightly toned, and curled at upper right corner. Laid in is an offprint of van Rossem's article, "A new race of sharp-shinned hawk from Mexico," reprinted from The Auk, vol 56 (1939) pp. 127-128, with color plate.

Fine associations with the author's gift inscription to the artist, and the later bookplate of the Scottish-Canadian naturalist and TV presenter who helped popularize ecological studies.
