First edition. One of three lectures delivered by Holmes before the Boston Society for Useful Knowledge, on the subject of “scientific mysticism.” The subjects of the first and second lectures were, respectively, Astrology and alchemy and Medical delusions of the past. Homeopathy was Holmes’ pet aversion, and his attacks on it aroused fierce resentment on the part of its adherents.
