Paris: G Charpentier, 1890. First French Edition (and correct first). Basis for the 1938 film directed by Jean Renoir, and for the 1954 film noir "Human Desire" directed by Fritz Lang, starring Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, and Broderick Crawford.

Fine in original yellow wrappers. Quarter-bound in blue leather with raised bands, gilt rule and design, and blue marbled boards and endpapers. Boards are lightly worn along the outer edges, else a bright copy of an uncommon title.
