1926 Paper Announces Gertrude Ederle's Victorious Swim Across the English Channel -1926

Red Wing News includes story about Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English channel. August 6, 1926. Measures 17 x 22 inches. Comple paper, 15 pages. Story reads in part, "Gertrude Ederle, American girl swimmer, has conquered the English Channel, the first woman to ever swim that turbid body of water, which has thwarted the efforts of many men and has only been conquered by five men in all history.” Known as the "Queen of the Waves," Ederle was an Olympic champion and world record-holder in five events. For her famous channel swim she trained with Jabez Wolfee who had himself tried to make the swim 22 times. During their training he continuously (truncated) tried to slow her down, telling her she could never last at the pace she was setting herself. In her first attempt in 1925 she was disqualified when Wollfe ordered another swimmer to pull her from the water, claiming she was drowning when she was according to her own report and those of witnesses, in fact resting. Wolffe had previously made known that women were not capable of making the swim. A year after the incident, Ederle began again, successfully swimming from France to England in 14 hours and 34 minutes. Paper is shedding. Cracked where creased. Toning does not affect image or text.
