Story reads in part, "Gertrude Ederle, American girl swimmer, has conquered the English Channel, the first woman to ever swim that turbid body of water, which has thwarted the efforts of many men and has only been conquered by five men in all history.” Known as the "Queen of the Waves," Ederle was an Olympic champion and world record-holder in five events.
