Including several strips of paper containing handwritten math problems, probably from the original user/owner, and also similar notes on the preliminary blank leaf. 16mo. 14 by 9.5 cm. 106, [2] pp. Karpinski, Bibliography of the Mathematical Works Printed in America through 1850, p. 145. Condition: leather heavily scuffed, with front and rear stitched together with thread over spine. Original spine is of similar leather and visible down center under crisscrossing threads. Remant strip with original spine and perhaps some of the harder board now bound in, in a sense, and (truncated) visible in rear when open there. As all the leather is contemporary and matching, we believe what occurred was an amateurish, inauspicious repair when the binding was falling apart and one can think of this as a crude sort of rebacking, although oddly, one that is in keeping with the material. The rear board is lacking its hard base, other than the remnant already allude to. Front cover also has a small hole in lower right, and rear with a few pinprick holes. Leaves within are heavily foxed, and some griminess besides, Leaf with pages 13 and 14 has edge tearing on vertical edge, and this widens to a hole or island of a chip. The loss of printed content, though, is relatively minor, as one can easily fill in mentally what is missing. Leaf with pages 15/16 has a small hole, about 1 to 2 mm, with some loss of numerical figures in a sample equation, more of which is illegible because of dirt. On the other page a few letters lost, but one can effortlessly make out the words regardless. Since there is a front blank leaf, we assume there might have been one in the rear, which no longer survives. Otherwise, the book is complete -- we collated the pages. (Inventory #: 007527)
