A standard text in the history of the subject, Head’s Studies in neurology reflects the results of his years of studies and experiments, most specifically on the dermatomes, the changes that occur after peripheral nerves are cut, and the effects of brain lesions on somesthesia. He also contributed significantly to the study of aphasia.

Head (1861-1940) was an English neurologist and teacher who enjoyed a devoted following of students and who published numerous works in a variety of medical fields.

Provenance: Margaret Kennard (1899-1975) was an early celebrated female neurologist. Her principle study was on the effects of neurological damage to primates. The Kennard Principle “posits a negative linear relationship between age of a brain lesion and the outcome expectancy: in other words, that the earlier in life a brain lesion occurs, the more likely it is for some compensation mechanism to reverse at least some of the lesion's bad effects” (see Dennis, “Margaret Kennard ...” in Cortex, 46 (8), 2010, pp. 1043-1059).
