The editor Jesse Mercer, 1769-1841, was a Baptist Minister who moved to Washington, Georgia in the 1820's. He was Pastor of the Washington, Georgia Baptist Church and one of the founders and the first leader of the Georgia Baptist Convention. (truncated) He published two newspapers in Washington, Georgia: The Christian Index and The Temperance Banner. He was the name sake for Mercer University in Penfield and later Macon, Georgia.
