A 1926 printing of Dreiser's second novel, first published in 1911, about a woman who bears the illegitimate child of a U.S. Senator (who dies before the child's birth), then has to make the best of her life going forward -- which she does, although things don't end well. It was filmed by Paramount in 1933, with Sylvia Sidney in the title role. The Boni & Liveright imprint on this copy, plus the listing of "An American Tragedy" as Dreiser's most (truncated) recent book in the front of the volume, dates this particular printing as 1926. (B&L, Dreiser's publisher from 1918, had taken over the rights -- and bought the plates -- to his earlier books in 1923, and reprinted them throughout the remainder of the decade; most copies in the marketplace currently, however, bear the Horace Liveright, Inc. imprint, which dates them as no earlier than mid-1928, at which time the firm changed its name. Or, to put it another way: any copy you see for sale described as "Horace Liveright, 1926" has been mis-dated by its seller.) . (Inventory #: 28453)
