By BERNHEIM, Hippolyte
Paris: Alcan, 1917. FIRST EDITION. Original printed blue wrappers preserved in a glassine sleeve, unopened. A good copy in original condition. First edition of this rational treatment of hypnotism by the “father of psychotherapy.” Reflecting on 25 years of clinical research, here Bernheim considers the role of automatism in human behavior as well as the ethics and methodology of hypnotism, induced somnambulism, and psychoanalysis.

This book represents an attempt to consolidate and elucidate the complicated notions about animal magnetism, hypnosis, and metaphysical research that were borne out of the late 19th century and put them in reasonable scientific rhetoric.
