A matrix catalog for various forms, colors, and styles of "base canvas" for Berlin Work

ca1840. Contemporary three-quarter leather.. Good; front joint cracked and torn; appx. half the samples have rudimentary child-like designs hastily sewn into a small area of the sample matrices (seemingly at a later date).. Thick oblong 8vo consisting of 54 samples meas. appx. 80 x 120 mm. Many of the samples have either manuscript English or German language titles.

The popularity of Berlin Work after the introduction of ornate printed paper patterns ca1810 dramatically increased in conjunction with the availability of high grade wool and thread in "modern" colors. What is offered her is apparently a trade catalog of various types of Berlin Work (truncated) matrices thereby providing an opportunity to enhance the effects and resultant impressions that could be derived from the limited chorus of stitches available for Berlin Work.
