Based upon the the 1891 Thomas Hardy novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," and one of director Roman Polanski's most acclaimed works, wherein Nastassja Kinski stars as the titular character; a young, innocent, and shy peasant girl, sent by her impoverished family to visit wealthy relatives seeking employment, only to be seduced and left pregnant by her supposed cousin Alec. The ninth film adaptation of the novel. Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, and nominated for three others including Best Picture and Best Director.

Set in Thomas Hardy's Wessex during the 1880s, shot on location in Manche, Ille-et-Vilaine, Calvados, and Côtes-d'Armor, France.
