Trade PB More than thirty years on -- with a movie having come and gone in the interim (burdened, at least according to its defenders, by the same misinterpretations that initially greeted the book itself) -- Ellis's third book remains, if nothing else, a fabulous cultural/literary artifact of where the Eighties had taken us. Inserted into this copy is a paper slip testifying to the outrage it stirred up among the liberal intelligentsia of the day: a disclaimer, essentially, (truncated) from the store that originally sold this copy (a well-known shop in West Hollywood, California), stating that the book was being made "available to you because of our commitment to the doctrine of freedom of expression," but making sure to add that "This should not be construed to be an endorsement of the contents." .
