Significant annotations throughout. A beautiful copy from the library of Thomas Ashby Jr. with his book label on the paste-down. The second Aldine edition of Cicero’s rhetorical writings, a close reprint of the 1514 edition, including the preface in which Aldus complains that he was plagued by those interrupting his work. Cicero here promotes his five canons, or tenets, of rhetoric: invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Like the earlier edition, Andrea Torresano, who managed Aldus’ business following his death in 1515, provides the text of Aldus’ dedicatory letter to the scholar Andrea Navagero. The index of this edition is substantially expanded from the first printing.
