- London: Henry Eversden, 1657
London: Henry Eversden, 1657. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 2 folding tables, woodcut initials and decorations throughout text. Contemporary calf, rebacked; new endpapers, fly-leaf plus first 3 printed leaves backed on thick paper. Overall quite a good copy with contemporary annotations and ownership inscriptions on the fly-leaf. First edition in English of Institutiones medicae (Leipzig, 1655), one of the author’s most significant works. Rivière (1589-1655) gives a comprehensive account of the nature and causes of illness; his extensive commentary covers physiology, pathology, therapeutics and instruments. Of special interest is a discourse on both the curative and harmful characteristics of various meats, spices, herbs and vegetables. This work is sometimes confused with another by the same author, the Praxis medica. Rivière is best remembered as the first to note aortic stenosis (see G&M).
