By RICKETSON, Shadrach
New York: Collins, Perkins, and Co., 1806. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf, rubbed; a very nice copy. First edition of the first American publication on preventative medicine. In general, Ricketson emphasizes several methods for preserving health, reflecting a holistic view integrating physical, mental, and social aspects for overall well-being. He advocates for a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and recommends avoiding processed foods and excessive sugar. He further encourages regular exercise as a key component of maintaining health, including walking, swimming, or any form of movement that promotes cardiovascular health. Sections on the environment, clothing, passions of the mind, retentions and excretions are also included. Of particular interest is Ricketson’s take on mental well-being, recognizing practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and stress management techniques. Like any good doctor, he suggests regular health check-ups, promotes vaccinations, and advises the use of herbal remedies and natural supplements, though he advises consulting healthcare professionals before starting any new regimen.

An appendix includes more specific observations on bathing, cleanliness, ventilation and medical electricity.

All of this sounds exactly like what your doctor would advise. But this books was published in 1806. Not much has changed in the last 220 years.

Ricketson (1768–1839), a Quaker physician, studied medicine under Benjamin Anthony and practiced in Dutchess County, New York, where he served as the president of the county’s medical society in 1823-1824. He knew (and was possibly friends with) Thomas Jefferson, to whom he sent a copy of this book on August 6, 1809.
