New York: Southwick and Pelsue, 1810. FIRST EDITION. With 1 hand-coloured plate. Contemporary calf, rebacked; sporadic foxing. First and only edition. In this work Scofield examines the origin and proper administration of the cow-pock vaccine. Along with many of his own observations, he offers encouragement to those who were experimenting in order to improve upon the original precepts laid down by Jenner, and he hopes “[to] stimulate every vaccinator to investigate.”
Scofield (fl. 1810), first resident surgeon of the New York Institution for the Inoculation of the Cow-pock, dedicated the text to renowned surgeon Valentine Seaman (1770-1817). An excerpt from Seaman's letter to Scofield is included in the work.
Blocker, p. 359; Heirs of Hippocrates, 752.
