By De Packman, Ana Bégue

Glendale, California: THE ARTHUR H. CLARK COMPANY, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Orange cloth covered boards. Very good. 182 pages. 24 x 15 cm. This copy has two important book plates, that of Phil Townsend Hanna and Marcus Crahan. Both Hanna and Townsend were members of the Zamarano Club - both active in the same Los Angeles bibliophilic circle. As Hanna passed away before Crahan, we believe this book went from Hanna's library to Crahan's. Crahan's bookplate was made for him in the 1930s by Hungarian-born designer Franz Geritz (1895-1945). Frontispiece illustration by Hernando Villa - "Outdoor Kitchen Old California".

De Packman includes a description of Domestic Life in Early California & Essential Native Food Products along with recipes, menus and a glossary of terms. Ana Bégué de Packman was a descendent of Don Francisco Reyes, alcalde of the pueblo in 1793 and Maximo Alaniz who owned much of what is now Westwood. Ana was a champion of the city's history and built environment. For more than 22 years, she served as Secretary of the Historical Society of Southern California and was a charter member of the First Families of California. Laid in: two copies of the publishers prospectus. Pages lightly toned. Boards lightly soiled, rubbed at corners and head and tail of spine.
