Chicago: Henry Regnery Company, 1974. First Edition. Paperback. Color photo illustrated wraps. Very good. 272 pages. 23 x 15.5 cm. Before Ina Garten's - Barefoot Contessa, Bert Greene and Denis Vaughan opened The Store in Amagansett in the summer of 1966 - a country-style gourmet take-out shop on Long Island's South Fork. The Store was among the first upscale prepared-food shops of its kind in the United States, known for salads, pâtés, roasts, and elaborate mousses sold to vacationers and locals. This cookbook grew out of the popularity of the shop and the demand from customers for the recipes behind its signature dishes. More than a cookbook, it interweaves recipes with anecdotal reminiscences about the shop, its customers, the East Hampton/Amagansett scene, and Greene's own family, positioning it as both cookbook and social chronicle. Light stains to the first couple of pages, otherwise clean and crisp. Wrappers rubbed at edges.
