1904. CLAY, John Cecil, illustrator. IN LOVE'S GARDEN: A HUMAN NATURE BOOK. Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Co., (1904). 92 pp. 4to., color pictorial paper covered boards, with rare pictorial dust jacket (lacking spine). Moderate shelfwear to boards and spine, some faint dampstaining to rear board at spine joint. Endpapers offset by dust jacket flaps. Color frontispiece detached, laid in. Verses by James Lane Allen, Heinrich Heine, Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Clement Scott, Margaret Deland, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Tennyson, Christina Rossetti and others. The Paul Laurence Dunbar dialect verse is illustrated by an African-American "Blackberry Lily." The flowers illustrated all have women's heads among the petals - a rather unsettling convention. The dustjacket is in fair condition, in a mylar jacket protector, chipped at edges and with a few small holes, closed tears and minor dampstaining.
