- 1836
1836. VOLKMANN, A[lfred]. W[ilhelm]. NEUE BEITRAGE ZUR PHYSIOLOGIE DES GESICHTSSINNES. Leipzig: Breitkopf un Hartel, 1836. First edition. Three engraved plates at end, of which two foldout. Octavo. [4],206,[2] pp. In a worn contemporary binding: green morocco back with gilt-stamped title, marbled boards, brown endpapers, and all edges marbled. Ex library; only a cancelled bookplate on front pastedown and a shelf label at heel - no other marks. Binding is rubbed along edges and joints, with an irregular patch of marbled paper lifted from the top board. Text leaves and plates are lightly foxed. A sound copy, about very good overall. Volkmann (1801-1877) was one of the foremost physiologists and distinguished teachers of his time. In 1842, he and Friedrich Heinrich Bidder (1810-1894) showed the sympathetic nervous system to consist largely of small, medullated fibres originating from the sympathetic and spinal ganglia.
