The only published work of the author containing several works by Puzos and a contribution by H J Crantz, one of Puzos' students, who wrote one of the standard treatises on obstetrics in the 18th century (see Hirsch). Puzos began his medical career as a military surgeon. Later in his career he established himself as an obstetrician and it is in this field that his reputation is set. The book offered here (truncated) contains a number of original and lasting contributions by Puzos, e.g., his demonstration of perforating the membrane during difficult births and saving both mother and child (pp. 323 - 341). Other contributions include the introduction of binomial examination in the obstetrical patient, attributed pelvic inflammation to ' metastasis ' of the milk (when dealing with puerperal sepsis), and taught that the lacerated perineum could be treated by approximating the patient's thighs firmly together. These are all present in this book with the addition of a section devoted to dentition and a pediatrics paper by Crantz.
