Geneva: Gabriel de Tournes, 1723. Each has separate title page, the first in red & black; frontispiece portrait of Sydenham, engraved vignettes, initials, head- and tailpieces. Modern full calf with old (original) backstrip laid down. An exceptionally clean copy with few wormtrails. This Opera, the second of nine editions in Latin from Sydenham's collected works, contains a number of dissertations on epidemics in various cities and regions of continental Europe during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Among the authors represented are Ramazzini, Lister, Hamilton, Drelincourt and many others. Sydenham (1624-89), one of the principal founders of epidemiology, revived the Hippocratic methods of observation and experience. His detailed analysis of malarial fever, measles and numerous other diseases are based upon his firsthand clinical observations.
