During a career than spanned over five decades, Scott (1786-1866) had more influence on the U.S. Army than any other person. Known as Old Fuss and Feathers because of his attention to detail and a penchant for gaudy uniforms, Scott fought in the War of 1812, the Blackhawk War, the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. He also served as Military Governor of Mexico City. He lost a bid for the presidency to Franklin Pierce, but remained a popular national figure, achieving the rank of lieutenant general, the first soldier since George Washington to hold that position.
