First edition. The present work, based on La Place's Théorie analytique des probabilités, treats the calculation of errors in measurements of the grandeur and the figure of the earth. The memoir represents Puissant's progressive research since the earlier publication of his grand work, Traité de Géodesie... (1805), the augmented third edition of which was published in 1842.
