Hydrolytic deamination of the purine bases is a possible explanation for the observed mutation. This can be achieved in vitro by HNO2 or by ultraviolet light in the presence of alkali. The resulting hydroxy-purine bases can be reanimated by ammonia in the presence of amino-purine bases. A theory to explain the observed phenomenon is proposed and genetic consequences are discussed.
