FIRST EDITION of the atlas volumes of Jean Baptiste Andre Dumas' early large work on practical chemistry. "In its treatment of the matter, and especially its arrangement, this remained a model for many subsequent text-books on technology." Meyer. Originally appeared in (truncated) eight octavo text volumes with a folio atlas containing 147 pates and 91 pages of explanatory text from 1828-1846. "His treatise contains an unusual amount of information on pure chemistry, mostly from original sources (references to which are given fully), and on technical processes (collected with considerable trouble) not otherwise accessible, with valuable diagrams of industrial apparatus." - Partington. Jean Dumas co-founded the Annales des sciences naturelles and the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. He was appointed assistant professor at the Sorbonne, and became full professor in 1841, remaining until his retirement in 1868. From 1840 Dumas was an editor of Annales de chimie et de physique.
